Parent Involvement Policy – Sonora School District

The Sonora Elementary School Board of Education is committed to establishing a meaningful and strong Home, School, and Community Partnership. The Governing Board recognizes that parents/guardians are their children's first and most influential teachers, and that sustained parent involvement in the education of their children contributes greatly to student achievement and a positive school environment. The Administration shall work with staff and parents/guardians to be involved in district and school activities; advisory, decision-making, and advocacy roles; and activities to support learning at home.

SES will plan and implement programs, activities, and procedures, as required under Title 1, that involve parents in the education of their children:

·        With input from Site Council on the Parent Involvement Policy/Plan

·        Provide parent surveys

·        Provide Title I Parent meetings

 

School-Parent Compact

Sonora Elementary has jointly developed with and distributed to all parents a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. It also describes how the school and parents will develop a partnership to help children reach proficiency on the California content standards. The school-parent compact describes the following items in addition to items added by parents of Title I parents:

·        The school's responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that helps children served under Title I meet the statewide academic content standards.

·        The ways in which parents will be responsible for supporting their child’s learning, such as monitoring attendance, homework completion, and television watching; volunteering in their children’s classroom, participating, as appropriate, in decisions related to the education of their children and the positive use of their children’s extracurricular time.

·        The importance of ongoing communication between parents and teachers through, at least, annual Parent/Teacher conferences, reports on student progress, and access to staff.

 

 

 

 

Involvement of Parents in the Title I Program

·        Sonora Elementary will provide the following necessary coordination, technical assistance, and other support to assist planning and implementing effective parental involvement activities to improve student academic achievement and school performance:

·        Provide monthly newsletters to parents.

·        Sonora Elementary School website to include information for parents and students.

·        Provide parent/student information/input through progress reports, climate surveys.

·        Assist in school-wide day and evening activities such as: Back to School Night, Family Fun Night, Open House, SSS (PTA), Science Night, Honor Roll Assembly, Band performances, Book Fair, Fall/Spring Festivals, etc.

·        Will convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend.

·        Offer flexible number of meetings, such as meetings in the morning, afternoon or evening.

·        Involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of the School Parental Involvement Policy through our School Site Council and annual survey.

·        Provide parents of participating children a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.

·        If requested by parents, opportunities are provided through Site Council for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

Sonora Elementary will:

·        Coordinate and integrate parental involvement in helping to develop the Local Educational Agency plan through Site Council.

·        Involve parents in the process of school review and improvement through climate surveys and Open House nights.

·        Build strong parental involvement by helping parents understand the state academic content standards and assessments through teacher newsletters that provide home reinforcement of skills and concepts taught at school, and at parent-teacher conferences.

·        Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children's academic achievement through the school web pages and links, with school registration and evening events.

·        Involve parents in school activities, especially academically related ones through strong volunteer program using PowerPoint training video and volunteer orientation

Sonora Elementary will educate teachers and staff, with the assistance of parents, about the value of parental contributions to academic achievement including:

·        Communicating, reaching out, and working with parents as equal partners through parent conferences, teacher newsletters, phone and letter contacts, SST meetings for students in need of additional support, school newsletters and SSS newsletters.

·        Building ties between parents and the school by encouraging parental involvement.

Sonora Elementary School will:

·        Coordinate the parental involvement program with other school programs.

·        Provide reasonable support for parental involvement activities under Title I by parental request.

·        With parental involvement, conduct an annual evaluation of the Parental Involvement Policy and its effectiveness in improving academic quality of Title I programs and the school.

·        Identify barriers to greater participation by parents in activities authorized by Title I.

·        Submit parents' comments to the California Department of Education if the Local Educational Agency plan is not satisfactory to parents.

·        Give parents an easy-to-understand annual Local Educational Agency report card.

·        Provide parents with timely information about Sonora Elementary School in a language and format they understand. The information will include:

1. Annual notification of the level of achievement of their child in each academic assessment required by state and federal laws.

2. The names of schools identified by state as Program Improvement (PI) Schools.

3. The parental option to transfer from a PI school.

4. Supplemental education services available in PI schools.

5. The right to request the professional qualifications of the children's teachers.

 

Building Capacity for Involvement

Sonora Elementary engages Title I parents in meaningful interactions with the school. It supports a partnership among staff, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement. To help reach these goals, the school does the following: Assists Title I parents in understanding academic content, standards, assessments, and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children through Back to School Night activities, parent-teacher conferences, and the posting of standardized testing information on the school website.

Sonora Elementary provides materials and training to help Title I parents work with their children to improve children's achievement again through Back to School Night activities, phone conferences, email between teachers and parents, Study Island, online links to sites such as Teacher-Ease, Accelerated Reader, Parent Connect through AERIES, and extra-curricular activities.

Educates staff, with the assistance of Title I parents, in the value of parent contributions and how to work with parents as equal partners through SSS meetings and events, SST(Student Study Team) meetings, RTI (response to intervention) meetings, instructional meetings on the responsible use of technology, awards programs, Family Fun Nights, etc.

Coordinates and integrates the Title I Parental Involvement program with other programs and conducts other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. These coordinated programs and activities include kindergarten registration and registration packets.

Distributes to Title I parents information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities in a format, and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand through on-staff translation.

Provides other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under this section as parents may request.

 

Accessibility

Sonora Elementary, in carrying out the parental involvement requirements of this part, local education agencies and schools, to the extent practicable, shall provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children, including providing information and school reports required under section 1111 in a format, and to the extent practicable, in a language such parents understand.

 

Adoption

This policy was adopted by Sonora Elementary School Site Council on January 14th, 2013. The school will distribute this policy to all parents of participating Title 1 children at the beginning of the school year, available in the school office throughout the year, and at all Title 1 Parent Meeting(s).
